Our meeting planning team brainstorms together—tossing ideas, making decisions, and having a great time doing it. The visionary behind Collinson’s Marketplace events, Chris Collinson, is a constant advocate of team weigh-in. Whether it’s about lanyards or conference bags, his call to action is, “Let’s go get opinions,” Sometimes, the call goes out to the entire office or just one department. Often, I’ll hear my name or Patrick Bradshaw, our Marketplace emcee, being called to Chris’ cube to offer feedback.
Chris is ensuring we don’t get a bad case of groupthink, which happens when brainstorming and decisions occur in a cohesive in-group without critical testing and evaluation. While teamwork is encouraged in today’s business place, it’s essential to beware of the downside of groupthink.
We’re encouraged to sell our ideas to colleagues in other departments of our office. When we involve people outside our team, we can better build off what we’ve presented, refine it and benefit from diverse talents. This approach yields top-notch results.
In this blog, I’m going one step further. I’m going to share stories from our meeting planning team with you. Follow us and help us prevent groupthink. We want your feedback (and hope you’ll pick up some valuable ideas for your meetings as well).
