Hewitt learned the importance of the hospitality industry during his first day on the job when a co-worker told him to find a piece of business that would keep the hotel open over the Christmas holidays. The hotel, which closed every Christmas for 140 years, left his co-worker out of work for six weeks each year and unable to buy Christmas presents for her grandchildren—seeing how the industry can have such an impact taught Hewitt an important lesson.
“My greatest career accomplishment over the years has been hiring the right people and seeing their successes.”
Professional Performance
Hewitt believes it is essential to build your team carefully. Hire those with the right attitude and desire at the entry-level, and then help them develop their talents. If all goes well, they’ll be ready for promotion when the opportunity comes. As a leader, Hewitt tries to position his team for success while empowering them to fail, which allows them to learn lessons from both.
Words to live by:
“Lead by example. How I dress, the hours I keep, the work I do, and how I carry myself set the tone for the rest of my team.”
If I weren’t in the hospitality profession, I’d be…
a charter boat captain.
