Nearly two years after closing the Sahara on the north end of the Las Vegas strip, SBE Entertainment Group has broken ground for a new resort. Construction crews are redeveloping what was formerly the Sahara into SLS Las Vegas, design icon Philippe Starck’s first hotel in the city. The resort-casino will keep the basic structure of the Sahara, but interior construction and exterior design will transform the property. When completed in fall 2014, the resort will have 1,620 guest rooms and suites, several restaurants, including one led by James Beard award-winning chef José Andrés, nightlife options, and a Fred Segal retail store. The resort also will have 34,540 square feet of meeting and event space.
