Construction underway on Austin Marriott
A groundbreaking ceremony was held Oct. 16 at the JW Marriott Austin to officially recognize the start of what will be the largest hotel in the city and the brand’s largest hotel in the country. The 34-story, 1,012-room hotel is slated to open in early 2015. JW Marriott Austin announced that more than 71,000 room nights have already been booked, including several industry conventions. The Specialty Tools and Fasteners Distributors Association and the Association of American Medical Colleges will each bring 3,000 attendees to Austin at their conventions. “The addition of a 1,000-room hotel to the downtown area will have a major impact on the city of Austin,” Bob Lander, president and CEO of the Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau, said. “Having this number of hotel rooms under one roof will allow the city to land large national conventions and meetings such as these for which it could otherwise not compete.” More than 110,000 square feet of meeting and exhibition space will be available at the downtown hotel.
